The concrete Observation Post constructed near the mouth of Sandy Creek in the Casuarina Coastal Reserve is one of six Observation Posts constructed for the military by private contractors between 1939 and 1941. This type of post was known as the `Singapore-pattern' observation post and was constructed to provide a clear view of the sea and along the length of the beach in both directions. The observation post consisted of a central raised, observation platform and two machine gun emplacements with semi-circular gun turrets on either side of the observation platform. The side walls of the observation post were angled to allow gunfire to be brought to bear in all directions along the beach....Accommodation Whitsundays welcomes WWII Observation Post Sandy Creek, the ideal Darwin NT Holiday outlet for all the family to enjoy.
