The house was built in 1865 by Edwin H. Mackereth who came to Australia, firstly, in search of gold. He planted vines in the 1880's, of which one remains and with his sons he supplied award winning wines to the town. Current vineyard was planted by Mt Avoca Winery.
Restoration of the original house or 'cottage' had star moments and since completion is enjoyed as a venue for weekend stays, occasional car rally and events including a stunning marquee wedding for 120 guests.
Accommodation includes two bedrooms, a new bathroom, and an open plan living room and dining area. The original kitchen, with no oven - includes microwave oven and electric hotplates. Outside are barbecues and an open-fire pit (fire restrictions apply). Sleeping around the fire pit can be arranged.
